Pet Therapy
At the hospice we provide pet therapy which improves the physical and mental wellbeing of the young adults and all at the hospice. The dogs improve moods and can support in decreasing the feelings of anxiety and sadness as well as increasing physical activity.
The dogs improve patient, family and carers satisfaction increasing energy levels, self-esteem and giving young adults a sense of security.
The dogs love to be stroked, hugged, and touched. The companionship of the dogs eases a sense of loneliness as most dogs are a great stimulus.
'My wife Geraldine and I have been visiting the Hospice since 2015 with our 11-year-old Golden Retriever Libby as part of the Therapet Service. In recent months, we have also attended the Young Adult Group with Libby and her 2-year-old 'great niece' Callie, also a Retriever, has just joined her. In fact, Callie made her first ever attendance for Therapet only last week with the Group.
We have been made so welcome by all the Young Adult Services Team who are typical of the friendly professionalism that permeates the Hospice. The meetings are always full of good chat and the warm, supportive atmosphere is clearly enjoyed by all there. We so look forward to seeing everyone and the dogs love the attention - and the prospect of a few treats! It's lovely being a small part of something so worthy.'
